The first in the Metro series and remastered for the Redux edition. Metro 2033 is a solid first-person shooter exploring the post nuclear war landscape of Moscow. Or more accurately, the underground subway metro system built to function as interconnected bunkers in the event of a disaster.
Plot
You play as Artyom, born shortly before the last days of the war in 2013. Now 20 years later, your home is under attack from strange creatures known as the "dark ones". With no-one else up to the challenge, you're forced to travel to the metro's underground capital to request aid to protect the settlement.
There's a lot more going on here than anyone knows however...
Gameplay
As you explore the metro, the player must scavenge unique makeshift weapons and ammo to defend yourself. Also gas mask filters to protect against the irradiated surface and very limited medical supplies. While exploring you have to contend with mutated monsters, dark ones, human factions with their own agendas as well as the toxic environment itself.
You can buy or loot weapon modifications to improve their capacity, handling or stealth. The stealth system itself is rewarding and lets you ambush enemies effectively. If you're discovered though, the game tends to throw almost every enemy in the area at your face.
The game's atmosphere and soundtrack is detailed and expresses the mood of the game accurately. Hiding from certain monsters as they pass by tends to get the heart rate going.
Tech
Metro 2033 Redux runs reasonably well. There are a number of unfixed crash bugs, and the optimisation in some areas leaves a lot to be desired. However the game is functional and more than playable.
The graphics are high quality and have no noticeable glitching issues and the audio is atmospheric.
Metro has a native Linux client. It's also earned a Platinum rating on ProtonDB and is Steam Deck Verified, ensuring it runs well.
Recommendation
Highly recommend the Metro Redux series for fans of the survival horror FPS genre. The gameplay is enjoyable and atmospheric. It took around 15 hours to complete a playthrough on stream.
